Today is all about Drew Barrymore's makin' out skills in rom com Going the Distance. Also why Annette Bening deserves an Oscar for The Kids Are Alright
my strangest dvds
Happy Birthday DVD's! Today you turn 15. Yes, that means you can finally have that asymmetrical haircut you've always wanted. In honour of this illustrious landmark, I thought i'd countdown the strangest DVD's I own in amongst my 7600+ collection on triple j breakfast this morning:REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA
Crazy/bad cult musical starring Paris Hilton, Sarah Brightman and Giles from Buffy > Set in a future where you take out a loan on organ transplants and when you cant pay them back they have this repo man who attacks you with a scalpel to repossess your organs.... all of which he does in song...oh and emo makeup. It has Paris hilton singing. nuff said.
ROBOGEISHA
Japanese movie about a geisha who is...um.... also a robot with nipples that turn into machine guns, and her legs turn into tank tracks... think martial arts, slapstick gore, soft-core fetish-wear, soap-opera.
I KNOW HOW MANY RUNS YOU SCORED LAST SUMMER.
Aussie horror movie set on a cricket pitch... I'll be honest: I never finished it.
FACES OF DEATH
CREEEEEEPY. A whole bunch of (actual) death footage clipped together. They got archival footage of people being executed and an car crashes and then they cut it together with faked death scenes. Banned in Australia for ages until recently...
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK: THE ADAPTATION
So, back in the 80’s, 3 kids from Mississippi decided that they were going to do a shot for shot remake of INDIANA JONES & RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK with their parents camcorder... it took em 6 years to make. Awesome.
FOR YOUR HEIGHT ONLY
A 70’s Filipino rip off of James Bond... played by a 4-foot midget named WENG WENG...Amazing.
BADI aka TURKISH bootleg of E.T
It's a little known fact that TURKEY are the worlds biggest rip-offs and they do the most bizarre ripoffs of movies. This is the most crazy lo-fi thing ever: imagine E.T made out of paper mache with a smoke machine stuck up his arse.
there’s also SEYTAN (Turkish bootleg of the Excorcist)
PULGASARI
North Korean version of Godzilla (where Godzilla represents capitalism) the movie was actually executive produced by freakin' KIM JONG IL himself.......and he needed to kidnap a director from South Korea to get it made.
MEGASHARK VS GIANT OCTOPUS
Ultra B-Grade monster flick starring Lorenzo Lamas (that doyen of quality cinema) and 80's pop hasbeen Debbie Gibson caught up between... well... a giant shark and a mega octopus. It features an awesome scene where a shark leaps out of the water to eat a 747. AMAZING
WARWICK CAPPERS SEX TAPE
Exactly 69 minutes long....maybe. It's just mostly him fiddling with himself and then watching himself. I swear the only reason I have this was for a story I was working on. I swear.
review: piranha 3d

More of an 'experience' than a movie. Piranha 3D is a thing of wonder. Review is 2min 05sec

gucci guilty
Frank Miller (Sin City, The Spirit)
Evan Rachel Wood
Chris Evans
Gucci?
Frank Miller's first directing gig since The Spirit is this upcoming short film for Gucci's "Guilty" fragrance premiering Sept. 12 during the MTV Video Music Awards. This kind of branded content is getting bigger and bigger. What do you think? Good ways of getting short films made with real budgets and methods of distribution? or is it just crass overblown commercials?

advertising with chatroulette?
Chatroulette is good for many things... okay, not really, just penises mostly. Although in the hunt for penises you may just find yourself being sold things... in the strangest way possible:
As you might've guessed, this a campaign for the movie The Last Exorcism, a horror film that is set to be released later this year.
Then there's Buzz TV. They call themselves an “intense” Spanish tv network (??), so they knocked up this murderous Chatroulette campaign to prove it. It's called 'Chatroulette Killer' and it depicts a girl getting her throat slit by a masked killer. The reactions of Chatroulette witnesses were... well, check it out for yourself
So what do you think? Is this genius or a dishonest use of chatroulette (a website, or course, known for its erudite discourse and deeply held sense of decency)
You can find more Chatroulette campaigns here

the people speak.
This is an amazing idea.
Matt Damon & Josh Brolin produced this TV special called The People Speak. In front of a live audience the greatest speeches of ordinary people that changed the course of history are delivered by accomplished actors and personalities.
In 2011, The History Channel will be doing The People Speak: Australia

the power of words
A stunning film from Will Hoffman and Daniel Mercadante to accompany Radiolab's Words episode. With an original score by Keith Kenniff. So, what is Radiolab? Its a 'show' on WNYC... that's all about ideas and the blurry boundaries between science, philosophy and human experience. Very very clever heady stuff. It's presented in this atmospheric but pacey way. They weave interviews, commentary, sound art and - heaven forbid - a sense on humour into their tales. It's a bit like This American Life but much much better. You can download the corresponding Words episode here

So here now: Marc's List of Websites and Podcasts for Movies Lovers
Or as I sometimes say when I'm very tired:
OMNOMNOMNOM INTERWEBZ LOVES MOVIEZ!
Begin....
Film Riot
Video Podcast that gets right into the nitty-gritty of how special effects are done. Also LolPacked.
The IFC Podcast
Pick a theme, dedicate a show to it. Done. Simple. Awesome. Matt Singer and Alison Wilmore are funny, down-to-earth film geeks with a touch of the complete-ist to them. And that appeals to me...because I am OCD *wipes down keyboard*
Boxcutters
Excellent podcast about television from Melbourne. If I didn't have this podcast sometimes I would have no idea what to waste my download limit on.
KCRW's The Business
Great round-up of the news in the world of production from California's venerable public broadcaster KCRW. What's more interesting though is their feature stories which are often really left-field about movie making. Curiously, this is where I often found material for dear ole Film Ed 101 pieces
KCRW's The Treatment
Such a simple, elegant program: 30min (tightly edited) conversations with filmmakers. Big ones. Small ones. Some you may never have heard of. This was the show I was inspired by when I did my old FBi slot Movie Adventures
Media Talk from The Guardian
The Guardian are the best podcast producers in the mainstream media world and this is a tightly-edited, well presented show about the world of UK Media.
Slash Film
Cinematical
Collider
CinemaBlend
Deadline Hollywood
Did you hear that *insert mid-level hollywood star* is starring in the new *mid-level Marvel comic property* and that *should know better* is directing?? These are all great places for hollywood/festival news.
Now there are countless blogs that I could recommend, but then it would all get a bit crazy. There's also a real lack of Australian film content (video and audio) on the list. Trust me, I'm looking to fix that:)
More importantly, I'm curious is there anything pressing that I should be downloading? you tell me.

circle: salt + four lions
Angelina gets her super-spy on in Salt AKA The Many Wigs of Jolie and cult British comic Chris Morris turns jihadi terrorism into the most confrontingly funny comedy in god knows how long: Four Lions. Enjoy...
the cocreate
Wanna own you're own piece of a movie? The Cocreate is the latest in a string of movie projects that are funded by a swarm of angels like yourself - for example The Tunnel being made at home in Australia. This one, though, comes from the extraordinarily talented Arin Crumley who was responsible for one of my favourite indie flick/experiment of recent times Four Eyed Monster. And his new trailer is... well, trippily beautiful check it out.
fml
From now on, when life gets too hard I will watch My Little Ponies doing Musicals.
Officially the weirdest, most oddly endearing thing I've seen this week.
Judge me, I dare you.

Did I mention that Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is a frakkin awesome nerdsplosion of epic proportions? Cos it is. Also, how tops are Grandmothers? All this and so godamn much more in today's Circle Movies
review: the special relationship
Ever imagine what would happen if Tony Blair and Bill Clinton were madly in love with each other and braided each others hair while they were taking down the IRA? Wonder no longer. This is my review of the most unintentionally hilarious political bromance of the year.If the above player isn't showing up you can right-click & download the MP3 of the review here.

circle: the special relationship + movie presidents
Wanna see Tony Blair & Bill Clinton kiss like teenagers (and why wouldn't you)? The Special Relationship is about as close as you can get...
Curiously, I also looked at the best fictitious US presidents on triple j tv about a year ago:
So, whaddya think? Who was the best fictitious American President?

news: neuromancer is on...

The seminal cyberpunk novel is being definitely in the pipeline, says Splice, Cube, Cypher director Vincenzo Natali and William Gibson 'really wants a movie made'. I had a chat to him this morning from sunny California and this is what he said:

You can get the full chat with Natali talking about Splice when it goes live in the triple j movies podcast. (No iTunes? head here)
