When was the last time you saw an aussie romantic comedy? We don't make em all that often, and with a few key exceptions we rarely do them well.

Agreed!
Though I can't say I totally follow your fascination with Brendan face? In fact, as I said in my little review/rant, I've had it up to here with males in Aussie comedies being played so dumb and 'blokey' - for a while there Cowell looked like he was going for George Bush IQ levels. What's the deal? Is that supposed to be an endearing everyman?
Hey, if Bush didn't have any responsibility whatsoever id probably find him fairly endearing too.
I adore Brendan Cowell (seriously one of the best actors going in this country) but can't abide Peter Heliar. Your review pretty much says what I feared about the movie.
Do the ten or so moments make up for the really bad plot and the 'i can see everything coming'?
I must say I disagree and agree all at once.
I totally agree that Brendon pulls off the dumb guy with dignity. Bizarre combination done really well. And chemistry in the film is brilliant. And Peter Dinklage just steals the film! He is so incredible!
But 2 stars Marc? Ouch! I'd give it 4! I really loved the film. I thought it was endearing, charming, funny and very well scripted. I get your point about the story line being rather predictable, but I just don't care. The film was so nice and well done that it didn't bother me. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
4 stars
When you said "American dwarf actor..." it sounded like he was an actor in that great American mid-west classic AMERICAN DWARF...
No? okay then.
I went to see this movie with some trepidation because, like most Australian films, I really wanted to like it but suspected it might just fall short but I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought the writing was tight and very funny, the production values were high and the acting was superb, from all major and minor characters (with the possible exception of Hamish Blake. Although I do love him, he didn't bring much to the cameo- just his essential Hamishness). With no ifs or buts I thought this was a really great, warm and funny movie, and the scene at the end with the taxi driver and the meter had me snorting with laughter. I would have been a lot more generous with my stars, Marc!!
