up in the air

It's considered to be one of the hot favourites for this year's movie awards season, but is George Clooney's oscar-baiting flick worth the bite? And can I pack more hamfisted metaphors into this blurb? find out in the audio review below (cmon, its only 2 min)

Would love to read your own thoughts down in the comments if/when u've seen it.

i loved it :D

jason reitman is 3 from 3 in terms of his films - he is one of my fave filmmakers.

i went out and bought the book today just to see the changes reitman made, considering the huge alterations to thank you for smoking's original storyline.

I really enjoyed it. A funny and unpredictable plot, and that uptight young co-worker (her name escapes me) was so enjoyable to hate! Personally, I give it about 3.5/5. I also love George Clooney from right about... now.

I gained nothing from this movie. The good actors barely saved it. There were some clever moments but the dialogue was generally annoying, like even the actors at times felt awkward and were wondering where it was all going. George Clooney's character ended up exactly where he started. I mean what the hell was his conversation with the groom to be? I didn't expect a sweeping endorsement of marriage but it wasn't even remotely amusing. Ditto for the scene with his captain hero dude. I kept waiting for something semi meaningful to happen where I could give a rats ass about this guy. Sometimes talking about nothing can mean a lot but I think these characters were really just talking about nothing. I was pleased he didn't end up with his love interest (like so many movies), and stories don't have to have huge "moral" outcomes, but his character didn't grow or develop in any way. He went through all that shit only to go back to his isolated and vacuous existence? This movie left me audibly declaring a huge WTF?

average movie. doesnt deserve the accolades its getting and its not award worthy movie. the actors are boring apart from vera farmiga who oozes charisma in every scene she's in. george clooney is at best charming but he get's annoying half way through the movie. 2 stars!

I hated this film. Its about Clooney playing an asshole whose only calling in life is firing people and getting lots of frequent flier miles. Along comes a bitch who threatens his plans by being better at firing people on the net. We see their (horrible) relationships, as if we could care about 2 such people. Jason Reitman should be made to live on welfare in Haiti for this movie. The characters in this are minor lackeys of US big Capital. We see them traverse around the States firing people for some down sizing company. From this premise its meant to be RomCom!? What I didn't like, especially, is that the film acts as a kind of apologia for the disgusting business practices of the recent US economic collapse by trying to show the humour and human stories that came out of it! Pleeeaaassse. It made me feel like strangling someone. Clooney is not much of an actor in this, he just plays himself. How this is being nominated for awards like Golden Globes is any ones guess! Reitman must know the right people?

What? did you put on Ocean's Thirteen instead of seeing this film?

The character development couldn't be clearer.

The two movies I have seen at the cinema this year have both starred George Clooney and have both been excellent. Maybe from now on I'll only watch George Clooney films?

(except Batman and Robin)

Richard, I completely agree with your comments. I didn't think much of Reitman's earlier films, but this one I really didn't like at all. Given it's glowing reviews out of the US (and lots of award nominations) I was surprised how contrived the story is and how stupid the final twist is.
