Excellent review. You've nailed the description: a few flaws, but when it works, it's mind-blowing.
I like how the movie is carving out such a unique place for itself, splitting critics and fans pretty much down the middle. At the very least, it seems to be inspiring people to go check out the source material, which - I think - can only be a good thing.
It opened in Hong Kong yesterday (12th) and I just saw it today. Surprisingly the cinema wasn't packed, unlike Slumdogs which I saw at the same time last week.
Anyways the point of this post: do they localise these movies? Near the end they say "New York, *something* and Hong Kong". Did they say "Sydney" in Sydney?
I guess due to local censorship laws, we did experience a cut in the middle of the "Hallelujah" section, only noticeable because the sound jumped quite a bit!

Great review, love that you split it into nerd/non-nerd. Very appropriate.
